Zechariah 3

Jesus, here, is called the Branch.  As I thought about what this means for the Godhead as a name for the Lord, I thought about a branch is one part of a tree.  On its own, it’s not quite a tree, not the whole tree at least.  It’s a part of the tree, and we would still identify it makes up the tree.  The same is for roots.  It’s part of the tree, but not the whole tree.  The trunk is another in that vein.

It makes me realize this is a picture of the Trinity.  The Branch is part of the tree, but not the whole tree.  The trunk is the tree, but not the whole of it.  The roots the same.  I don’t know if those are the other names that can be attributed to the parts of the Godhead, but it helps me think through just what the Trinity is.  The Branch was cut off to die for our sins.  Like you would cut off a branch from the tree.  It makes that act so much deeper and bigger than I had been thinking.  He did that for our sins.  God took a part of Himself and cut it off for us.  A branch can’t survive without the tree.  So, then, The Branch had some kind of suffering similar to being cut off to the rest of God in death.  At least, that’s what I imagine from the name and thoughts.
